Nathan and Haley's romance didn't begin with a mutal attraction or pursuing on either's part. There was no love at first sight or flirting. There was however the fact that Haley's best friend happened to be Nathan Scott's half-brother, and I guess you could call the two brothers nothing short of enemies. So, how did Haley and Nathan begin to first interact? It's not like Haley would have gone and talked to Nathan on her own, she was Lucas's best friend, and that was that. But Nathan had other plans.
So, Lucas has joined the basketball team. Nathan? Not so happy about that. So, what does he do? Naturally, he gets the team to haze and taunt Lucas. But that's not all. Threatened with being kicked off the team because of his poor grades, Nathan saw a golden opportunity to get at one of Lucas's greatest weaknesses: Haley James. She was a tutor, and he was in need of a tutor. A match made in heaven, right? Not so much. Well, not yet at least.
Haley originally rejects Nathan's request for her to become his tutor because she was more than hesitant to help someone who treated her friend the way that Nathan had. However, after persistent attempts on Nathan's part, Haley finally gave in and became Nathan's tutor on two conditions. One: Lucas was never to find out, and two: Nathan leaves Lucas alone. Nathan agreed, and Haley began to tutor him. Nathan tried to work his charm on Haley frequently but being the smart girl that she is, she didn't fall for it.
Just because Nathan agreed to leave Lucas alone, that didn't mean he liked him any more than he did before. Eventually Nathan's constant remarks about Lucas finally caught up to him and his girlfriend, Peyton, ended things with him. There to pick up the pieces was Haley, who helped him through the post break-up mess, while still keeping a friendly relationship even though it caused problems between her and Lucas.
Though she ignored them for quite some time, Haley finally came to terms with her relationship with Nathan and realized that she had developed feelings for him. However, their relationship was put on halt when Brooke interfered and falsely told Haley that Nathan had made fun of her for a note that she had given Nathan saying that she would help him with "anything at all". Haley believed Brooke, and began to question if there was really any good in Nathan like she had originally believed.
Nathan came to her the next morning and convinced her that Brooke lied about the note, and though Haley believed him, she still wanted to end things with Nathan. Brooke, feeling responsible, devised a plan to send Nathan and Haley on a "serial-date" so the two could get to know eachother more. The date went extremely well until one of Nathan's friends showed up and Nathan denied that he was on a date with Haley and claimed she was "only his tutor". Furious, Haley left.
The next morning, once again, Nathan found Haley to apologize once more. Haley wasn't too quick to take an apology, but when Nathan kissed her for the first time, she couldn't deny her feelings for Nathan. The next day, finally acknowledging his relationship with Haley, he walked into school holding hands with her for everyone to see.
So, there you have it. The beginning of a romance, with included ups and downs and highs and lows. Though their relationship was at times rocky at best, theres no denying that these two love one another deeply and were without a doubt made for eachother
